Lightfoot, speaking during a press availability on Thursday afternoon, said that city officials are exploring different ways to invest in communities, and said that Chicago will focus on the city’s West Side, which has been ravaged by gun violence.
“It’s obvious: we cannot arrest our way out of this problem,” she said. “Fundamentally, if you look at the West Side and you look at the problems, the opioid addiction that is really harming so many individuals, families and communities, the investments we have to make in human capital and the investments we have to make in infrastructure, those are why I spend so much time on the West Side.”
Lightfoot’s comments come as the city saw three mass shootings on Wednesday alone. One teen was killed in North Lawndale, and at least 17 other people were injured in the three attacks, which occurred within a six-hour span of one another.
In all, nearly 30 people were shot on Wednesday alone, according to Chicago police.(snip)
“I really do believe that as goes the west side, so goes the rest of the city of Chicago,” she said. “If we can get it right here, with the mix of resources and investments and capacity building in neighborhoods, empowering residents to be able to hold the territory under their feet, with our help and our support not just in the short-term but in the long-term, that’s really what the investments have to be about, and I’m totally committed to that.”

I was watching some mafia documentaries last night. I saw how much effort went into prosecuting them in the 1980s from NY to Philly to NJ and more. Where are the feds in all of this? You know most of these shootings are fueled by criminal enterprises - drug dealers, drug turf wars, drug dealer robbers, retaliations etc. RICO them. Or just decriminalize the stuff and take the profit out of it. I’m flexible on what it will take, but all this murdering is no good. FBI is too busy with political prisoners these days to bother investigating these drug syndicates I guess.
And you can’t invest to solve the problem. You need to hire a army of mercenaries and let them loose with full immunity to do the job.
“Gun Violence”. So does this mean that arson is match violence? Vehicular homicide is car violence? Rape is penis violence? Suffocation’s are pillow violence? Etc.
Arresting and severely punishing the criminals is actually the only acceptable way out of it. This Lightfoot thing is a drooling moron.
Chicago already has problems with shootings on its expressways. Adding more "infrastructure" is unlikely to help reduce gang violence, it will just let it spread around more quickly.

I disagree. She says very clearly that they can’t arrest their way out of it, but they can SPEND their way out if it “investing in human capital”. Translation more government spending and more government employees.

117,000 hang members in Chicago. Many police are retiring. Can’t blame them. They are outnumbered by gang members 9 to 1. And it’s not getting any better.
There should be harsh penalties for violent gun crime. Mandatory, non plea bargainable, truth in sentencing penalties such as a minimum 25 years for violent gun crimes less than murder, armed robbery with a firearm or threat of using one in an armed robbery, any assault on a person with a firearm, assault of a police officer with a firearm & similar crimes.
And yes, an absolute death penalty for homicide with a firearm with nothing less as an option & even intentionally wounding a police officer with a firearm or other deadly weapon.
The real problem isn’t ‘gun violence’ is CRIMINAL VIOLENCE AND GANG VIOLENCE...

I disagree. The real problem is a mayor who is a moron and who is complicit in the perpetration of all felonies within her city.
“Why I spend so much time on the West Side.” Spending time and getting stuff done are 2 different things. Every city in this country needs a Donald Trump or Rudy Guiani.
