The Bola is not supposed to be used on a perpetrator holding a firearm. A backup officer is supposed to draw his service weapon in such cases and the Bola wielder is supposed to retreat.

A single officer is supposed to drop the Bola and draw his service weapon if he sees perpetrator with a gun.
