There is definitely an important association with hearing and aging. This piece seems similar to the observation that musicians with perfect pitch suddenly find that disappears, or at least changes at around age 60. In the mildest cases, notes “sound” a half step lower than they really are: you hear a D-flat note, and swear it’s C. Weird.
