It’s possible to game some match-up systems by taking a lose early if a first round loss doesn’t take you out of contention.

They're still in it. That loss hurts though. They play a sort of round robin where w/l and goal differential gets factored in to who advances to a subsequent round. I don't know all the details of how it's set up. But a first game loss doesn't knock you out. Losing by 3 goals is pretty damaging though.
