Let the Games begin! After a year of waiting, the U.S. Women’s National Team will launch its Olympic campaign on July 21, taking on Sweden in its first match at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. local/4:30 a.m. ET at Tokyo Stadium in Tokyo and the match will be broadcast in the United States on the USA Network and Telemundo, with streaming coverage also provided at NBCOlympics.com and through the Telemundo Deportes App. The match will also be replayed later that day on NBCSN at 8:30 a.m. ET and 6 p.m. ET.
The USA enters the tournament looking to capture its fifth gold medal and, in the process, become the first reigning Women’s World Cup champion to capture Olympic gold. Seventeen players on the USA’s Olympic roster helped the USA win its fourth World Cup title in France during the summer of 2019.
To do so, the USA will not only have to navigate a grueling schedule with only two rest days between matches in the heat and humidity of the Japanese summer, but will also have to contend with a talented field of opposition, beginning with Sweden.

The real shock was 0-0 Australia.
That’s what really spelled disaster.
Here is the first replay of the “foul” on Tierna Davidson that I could find. There are several angles shown. For the best pics of the leadup to the “foul,” pause at 2:23, 2:20, and 2:32. The picture quality isn’t good, but the angle is clear. Tierna Davidson clearly had the inside track to the ball. She clearly reached the ball a step or two ahead of the Canadian. The Canadian player clearly comes in from behind. If that is a foul, the call should have gone against the Canadian player.

The ref awarded a goal kick. I’d be ok with that.
The Canadians protested and the VAR ref awarded a foul on Davidson, apparently because her arms flew up and made incidental contact with the Canadian player’s head as Davidson was hit from behind.
I will let the rules hawks debate the point, but generally speaking, when you are rear-ended by someone coming in from behind, the fault goes to the person who initiated contact. Davidson had a step advantage before the Canadian player came in. She was called for fouling a player behind her and out of her vision, as her arms came up to catch her balance.
Bad call.
Bad call by the VAR ref who overruled the correct call on the field.
Bad calls happen from time to time in all sports. It is a shame when a game is decided by a bad call. Soccer is particularly vulnerable to this because scoring is so low. In this case, the bad call produced the only score in the game.
A strike against VAR as well, by the way.

Davidson had position. She had won the ball. Her arms came up by reflex as she was hit from behind. How that is a foul on Davidson, I don’t know.
My browser lets me do the replay at .25 speed. If you can do that, watch 2:37-2:38 in slow motion. Davidson’s arms — both of them — do come up in a balancing reaction AFTER contact is initiated by the Canadian player who comes in from behind. Davidson clearly has a step advantage on the ball.
I see a lot of protesting the VAR call on Twitter.
At the end of the day we failed to score though.

I would have bet on the Mexican GK Ochoa who was fabulous in World Cup matches. But Brazil did great keeping their shots just out of his reach while Mexico failed on their first two shots.

Say goodbye to this golden generation of players. They have been the oldest team in the field in every major tournament since 2015. The rest of the world has caught up. Nice to bow out with at least a bronze, but there will be a lot of new faces by the next World Cup.
