I worked in an office building that was three years old South of Berlin. To save the planet the ripped out every single light switch, light bulb, and light fixture to install “smart” devices that we workers could not manually operate. It was infuriating. If you sat more then 30 seconds in one spot (including on the toilet) the lights shut off. The toilet sensors were especially bad because it was pitch black and if you’ve ever been in a German bathroom they generally had two doors. One for the toilet area, the other for the washroom. Sitting in the office while looking at the screen and the lights would shut off because no one was moving. I do admit though, the “green” living roof was pretty nice to have lunch. But geesh. The Germans sure do love tormenting themselves.

My sister and family lived in Heidelberg for many years, the brother-in-law worked for NATO.
They had many fun stories about Germans avoiding any unneeded use of electricity.
That and German dentistry, most tried to have dental work done in the States.
