Considering that was the only option the medical community gave people, then they have every right and every reason to self treat.
When the medical community tells people to go home and self-isolate and not go to the hospital unless they couldn’t breathe or their lips were turning blue, they left patients with no choice.
It was a horrendous dereliction of duty and essentially medical malpractice to not treat patients but rather send them home to take their chances.
There is massive blood on the hands of all those involved in that policy and it’s beyond disgusting that you are sneering at people for doing the very thing they were forced into by a medical community that refused to treat them.

Many here encouraged him to go elsewhere. It seems he trusted his doc more. Which is understandable after all we are all unverified internet people.
I think there are numerous lessons here for all sides of the issue to learn from.
