They are the janitors of the beach. There are places like poorly operated landfills that present an abundant food source which can cause a population boom far from their natural habitat, of course.
I've commercial fished from Baja to Bristol Bay and just liked having them nearby, along with all the other wildlife. The smells and sounds of being on salt water - I haven't lived more than five miles from it my entire life. Their raucous call alone takes me back to fond memories of my youth, like running a skiff on Puget Sound at age 12.
