The Delta variant of COVID-19 is now the dominant strain worldwide. Delta is now reported as the dominant strain in Virginia.

The Delta variant is causing a surge of cases in Africa, where only 1% of the population is fully vaccinated. Deaths jumped 40% last week alone. Tunisia and Namibia are seeing the worst of it right now. Even a year from now, global vaccine supplies may not be enough to meet demand from Africa’s 1.3 billion people.

Canada's rate of full vaccination surpasses the USA after a rapid surge in June. They expect to begin re-allowing fully vaccinated Americans to visit for non-essential travel in mid-August.

Republican Governor Spencer Cox of Utah said in a press conference today (17 July) that anti-vaccine rhetoric is killing people. He said he sees the coronavirus vaccines as a key accomplishment of the Trump administration and believes the herculean effort to develop them in less than a year will go down as “one of the greatest achievements of medicine in human history.”

New head of the Republican Governors Association, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, began a tour to encourage people to overcome vaccine hesitancy. Arkansas has near the Nation's lowest rate of vaccination, and has the Nation's highest rate of the current surge of the Delta variant, with cases quadrupling in recent weeks.
