‘Swatting’ call leads to death of Tennessee man targeted for his Twitter handle

60-year-old Mark Herring was a tech guy.

“He was so smart,” recalled Corinna Fitch, one of three daughters who says their father was always ahead of trends. “I think he joined Twitter the day or the week Twitter came about.”

He grabbed a handle that reflected his love for the state where he was born and raised his family. “He just wanted to be @Tennessee because he loved the Vols,” said Fitch, with a slight smile.

As Twitter grew, it was clear to all that Herring owned prime internet property. “He would just in passing say, I got another offer on my Twitter handle today.”

But Herring couldn’t be bought and that was made clear April 27th, 2020.

It was late in the evening when Fitch’s doorbell rang. “I open the door and he says, I have a pizza for Mark Herring. He would have told me if he sent us pizza. I went away and called, texted, no response.”

Across town, Fitch’s sister Katie Hooge and their mother Fran Herring also received a delivery. “I said, I didn’t order [pizza],” Fran recalled.

Pizza after pizza showed up. All cash on delivery. Fitch took to Facebook posting a message to her father. “Hey, I need you to call me. And my sister texted, What’s this about? And I just said, I just got pizza for Daddy at the house and she said we just got pizza for Daddy at our house.”

25 years in prison with no access to a computer for the rest of their God-forsaken life. These people are scum.

The Twitter handle they were trying to extort from him was @Tennesee.
The person responsible was Shane Sonderman who is currently in jail.

That’s no prank. I propose the death sentence for anyone who does this “swatting.” It should be carried out in public, with everyone invited to watch and cheer.

Premeditated Murder!
Penalties in Tennessee are
Life with possibility of parole
Life without parole
Death penalty

From Tennessee code..
“(d) As used in subdivision (a) (1), “premeditation” is an act done after the exercise of reflection and judgment. Premeditation” means that the intent to kill must have been formed prior to the act itself. It is not necessary that the purpose to kill pre-exist in the mind of the accused for any definite period of time.”

Anyone who commits a swatting where someone gets killed should be charged with capital murder.

Needs to be a death penalty for “Swatting” since it IS Attempted Murder!

From the story:

“A kid in the United Kingdom made the call to my dad’s local police,” Fitch said.

The accomplice will not be extradited from the United Kingdom because he’s currently a minor.”

If this were my dad I think I would be planning a trip. I hear England is nice this time of year.

Apart from what should happen to these two thugs the police should be sued as well. They get a call from the UK and respond in full force? They did nothing to verify who the caller was and where he was?

How is that any different than the cops in Idiocracy?

Phone numbers can be spoofed. My wife has received spam calls from her own number. I've had them get close.

And knowing that the police have no responsibility to do anything to verify the number?

Like call it back?

And the cops are all too willing to just trust every call they get and pull guns on anyone around.

My recommendations is never go near a cop and never answer the door for a cop.

Someone needs to take a baseball bat to the kid who did this. The police are culpable as well. I mean really? WTF were they thinkin? Had the sugar from their donuts melted their brains?

Good advise, but in this instance, they were there in force to murder him. Not much he could do.

I think Shane Sonderman should be fitted for a hemp necktie, assuming the law allows it.

It’s like the incidents where they get the wrong address. In this day and age anyone can find almost anyone’s address in a few minutes and executing a search or arrest warrant should require a little more detective work than that. I think they used to call it surveillance.

Weak sentence for the perp, only 5 years. IMHO he should be executed.
