“It takes approximately 1,847 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef.”

I’m guessing that they take into account the water it takes to grow the plants for feed (stockyard cows), but it wouldn’t surprise me if they include rainfall as well.

The water used in processing the meat (cleaning, freezing, etc.)

Heck - they might even figure that it takes 20 people to raise the cow and get it to market (truckers, etc.) and include their 8 glasses of water and 1 gallon per flush of the toilet.

I’ve also seen crazy numbers of how much water it takes to grow corn (ethanol) compared to other food crops that are now not being grown.

The documentary that my Brother-in-law quoted from is called “Cowspiracy”. It was from 2014 and featured the usual left wing Hollywood virtue signaling suspects. Every statistic used in the movie has been thoroughly debunked including the 1847 gallons of water per pound of beef produced. But once leftists latch onto something they never let go of it. It is an often quoted made up number with no connection to reality.

There are 94.4 million cattle and calves currently residing in the United States. 10% of these are dairy cows. So that leaves 85 million beef cattle. At slaughter the average carcass yields 500 pounds of meat and is 18 months old. 85 million multiplied by 500, multiplied by 1847 equals 78.5 trillion gallons of water every 18 months or 52.3 trillion gallons per year.

To give this some perspective the average US citizen uses 82 gallons of water per day, multiplied by 330 million multiplied by 365 days equals 2.54 trillion gallons of water per year. We are suppose to believe that cows use over 20 times more water than people do in this country.

The infrastructure does not exist to deliver that amount of fresh water to the cows in this country, especially considering that the vast majority of cows live in rural areas. Has everyone forgotten that cows used to be "driven" thousands of mile through areas with little water from Texas to markets North. Has everyone forgotten all the cowboy movies by people such as oOhn Wayne that used to be popular?

In most parts of the country water is fairly expensive and many of us can't even afford to water our lawns in the summer. Farmers could not afford to use the amount of water that these clowns are claiming cows use. My parents and brother who still raise beef cattle use water from a municipal water system for their cows. They pay the same rate as every one else. They do not water their lawns and their water bills are less than most of their neighbors who don's have cows but water their lawns.

It is sad to me that people in this forum accept without question the crap that leftists throw out as facts. It is made up nonsense in many cases.
