This was also the year of the Meadows Report aka The Limits to Growth put out by the Club of Rome. It predicted superexponential growth leading to catastrophe. (The book's publication date is given as 1974, but I remember the report was out and being discussed in 1972, right around the time I was finishing my dissertation.)
