The Democrats and the media blew the threat posed out of proportion, as though it was going to end humanity. Polling found that Democrat voters believed that COVID-19 was hospitalizing something like 30% of the infected (reality is 5%) and killing something like 10% (reality is somewhere between 0.65% and 1%). So they made it out to be more than it is.
But it’s also not nothing. The US has 330 million citizens. If all of them got COVID-19 and between 0.65% and 1% of them died, that’s 2 - 3 million deaths. The vaccines are safe and effective. We went to several wars over 9/11 (rightfully so) when 3,000 Americans were killed. It would be insane to ignore the threat of a thousand times as many dying. Doesn’t mean you shut down the economy; it means you take REASONABLE steps to reduce transmission while working on treatments and preventatives (e.g. vaccines). When the Phase 3 clinical trial results showed that the vaccines are safe and effective, it made sense to get them as soon as possible. President Trump has urged people to do so many times. I did so back in January/February.
COVID-19 was never going to end humanity. But it did warrant a measured, reasoned response. President Trump succeeded in that. The state governors failed. They shut down the economy. President Trump delivered the vaccines, which are the answer to the Chinese virus problem.
