His FIRST name was Johns.

Wikipedia: "His first name was inherited from his grandfather Johns Hopkins, who received his first name when his mother Margaret Johns married Gerard Hopkins."

Actually it was his grandfather’s mother’s family name. Hence the “plural” form. The grandfather and he were each named Johns Hopkins - mother-name_father name.

It was common in that time and earlier to have a “middle” name based on the mother’s family. In this case, they went further and just used it as a first name.

(*fun note….current lead paragraph on Wikipedia makes sure to note that he was a SLAVE OWNER!!!!! despite being historically labeled an abolitionist.)
