The United States Air Force Academy, my alma mater, has suffered from an obvious leadership problem for some time.
During my 30th reunion several years ago, my classmates and I noticed a marked change at our beloved institution – the focus on training warriors to defend the nation was gone. In its place was a focus on buildings, big athletics, and ‘diversity’ (we came to find out later except diversity in political ideas).
I confronted then Superintendent Lt Gen Michelle Johnson at the reunion about the lack of discipline, the lack of focus on a warrior culture, even the lack of respect for alumni walking the Academy grounds, and she said, ‘We don’t believe in hazing’. This was such a cowardly answer to her obvious deliberate destruction of the mission of the institution. I was shocked. [snip] I wrote this story following this encounter – The United States Air Force Academy Doesn’t Train Warriors Anymore.
USAFA embarrassed itself shortly after with a horrendous parade march in front of the President of the United States, where cadets couldn’t even march in a straight line, a result of lack of discipline and training. I wrote this article after the incident – Air Force Academy Has Leadership Problem.
I was then approached by the Academy, through a classmate via a Facebook chat. This classmate had obviously been talking with Academy leadership and had been asked to contact me.
It seems the Academy wanted to make a deal.
Incoming Superintendent Lt Gen Jay Silvera wanted to invite me to his house for dinner. They wanted me to give speeches at the Academy. They promised I would ‘sell a lot of books’.
But there was a catch.
I couldn’t write anything negative anymore about the Air Force Academy.
The corruption stunk.

They put a woman, whose only flying and command experience was in refueling,
= = =
And just how do they do that refueling?
You know, what is the mechanism?
And she must have been good at it.
All we will have is transgender and gay….they can sign up a we get to pay for the surgery
Regardless of how good she was at refueling:
Did she have personal experience in going places where people were trying to kill her?
Does she have experience in knowing what it's like to send men to do things that they may not come back from?
What life experiences does she have that qualifies her to oversee the training of men who must go out to kill or die, and command warriors?
And how far has this swept into West Point? And the other service academies?
A true patriot of a president would promptly incarcerate all such military figures for punishment under UCMJ.
Yes, that’s a dig at the next POTUS if they fail the test. If it happens to be DJT, I hope he’s learned the hard lessons on staff and actions (on the latter, he simply needs to be absolutely brutal).
Appalling does not go far enough. If they can’t march correctly then you have a huge failure at every level of, not just this academy, but probably all of them.
I went Marion Institute, a Military Junior College and I did two years of Army Rotc, leaning to march and follow orders was the first thing you learned along with a few other things like making your bed properly and a lot of little things that were important also.
So the kind of officers they are turning out aren’t worth Spit. General of the Air Force Hap Arnold is Turing over in his grave along with Jimmy Doolittle and many others.
Remember the photo of the West Point cadet who had written inside his hat something to the effect of “Communism will win”?
I strongly suspect the rot is widely-metastasized into all the services.
All good questions.
I suspect, in her case, the answers are No/No/None.
