'Eliminate this bird': Feral peacock found dead after angry California resident's Craigslist ad

A group of residents in McKinleyville’s Azalea Heights neighborhood are up in arms over the killing of one of the most polarizing members of their community: a peacock known by most as Mr. P, or Azul, or Peony, depending on who you ask.

The multi-monikered animal was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound on Wednesday after one resident, who was irate by the bird’s frequent 5 a.m. wake-up calls, decided to put a hit out for it on Humboldt County’s Craigslist page

...the “Wanted” section on June 13, followed by instructions on where and when to find the bird. “If you’ve ever heard a peacock’s call, you know it’s as loud as a car horn [...] Please contact me so we can form a strategy to eliminate this bird, and also to agree on how much you will be compensated.”

(If you save your own address on Google Maps, the location-searching service will mark it using the same blue icon to help you navigate to your desired destination.)

When the man posted the ad, he unknowingly revealed his own location — and Glass realized he was the same neighbor who allegedly approached her and other residents previously to discuss the relocation of the bird, which resulted in an argument.

Wow...many thanks. I checked it out, and they really do cross. It’s gonna get very interesting around here.

-->I don’t like to just kill off animals. Even when they’re invasive. I draw the line at my grandkids. If they are attacked by feral animals or insects of any kind, I will see that the problem is resolved immediately.

Problem is the animal control generally does nothing. Covered by treaties, not our department, whatever.

This is why we have the 2nd amendment :)

Instead of killing the peacock I’d have paid to have it caught and moved to a place that it can live....

I don’t have a real problem with it. And as I stated, I don’t like to *just* kill off animals. I.e., it has to be a good reason.

I remember, years ago, someone several blocks away with peacocks. They do mane quite a noise in the morning.

Years ago I had raccoons coming in my garage through a cat door to get at the cat food. Rented a live trap and borrowed a .22 from my neighbor so I could dispatch them and dump them in my ditch.

Told a co-worker about it and she got upset. Told her I’d be happy to bring them to her in the trap.

“I would have paid to have it caught and relocated.”

Me too.

Use the same recipe I used for Canadian geese.(unwanted Canadian Immigrants)

A small piece of field corn with the cob pushed on the prongs of a connibear trap.

Make sure you fasten it good as they really flop around.

When caught, after prepping, relocate to the oven at 325 degrees for one hour to melt off excess fat. Using a clean needle or sharply pointed knife, prick the skin of the goose all over, to allow the fat to run when it roasts. Stick the skin at an angle, so as to pierce just the skin and not the meat of the bird.

After an hour’s roasting, remove the goose from the oven, and pour off the fat from the pan. Then roast another hour and remove fat again.

After the goose has roasted for 2 hours total, reduce oven to 275 and continue roasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes, or about 15 minutes per pound total, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 165 degrees at the center of the breast.

Relocate goose to the dining room table and enjoy.

BOOM, it is only a bird. Don’t forget to pluck the feathers. I wonder what it tastes like?

I take it you haven’t lived near a Peacock. It is obnoxious.

Use 22 shotshells, when the police showed up about gunfire coming from my back yard, I showed them the ammo, and the dead ‘Coons. They said, no problem, those can’t kill anything beyond 15 feet anyway.

Raccoons are really smart though, they didn’t come around begging for food after I killed 1.

I didn’t say it was a nice sound. LOL

Merely that it didn’t sound like a woman screaming, I could use that noise on my Alarm Clock and instead of paying to kill it he (or she) could have paid to have it caught and moved.

They have been in a long-term lemming movement off the cliff edge...

It was nice to see a free edition of the Chicago Tribune in my driveway.

Not that I have any fish to wrap, this is a bucket move by a once reputable paper.

They are extremely noisy.

********************************

I had a peacock that lived on my property for about five years. I really didn’t find him to be that loud, except a little bit during breeding season. However, for the other 9 months out of the year, he didn’t make a peep.
