It may seem weird that a hacker would go after an exercise bike, but models these days come with a lot of fancy gadgets and features that can be turned against users to harvest their information.
Things get a little scarier when you realize that Peloton bikes also have a microphone and camera installed on them. Hackers can use these to spy on whoever's using the machine.
Of course, the hacker needs an active connection to the bike in order to spy on its user in real-time. As such, they'll have to install a backdoor that gives them permission to access the bike's hardware without the user knowing.
Not only that, but McAfee notes that hackers can even decrypt the data sent by the Peloton to the servers. This means that the cybercriminal can harvest all the confidential information the bicycle is collecting to get a better idea of who's using it.

These bikes also cost a few thousand dollars. Folk may be willing to give a hacker a couple hundred to unlock them.
“Day 100. User 1 is hanging three shirts, two pairs of pants, and one jacket on the bike. Same as day 99.”
A weight bench is a far better investment for storage. Bookes, magazines and then you still have room to hang clothes on the bar.
My response would be, “Te bike is yours... come take it.”.
What is a "Te bike"? is it French or German made?
This is why I don’t use an exercise bike.......yeah, that’s the reason.
It’s obviously a typo, you pedantic ninny.
It’s a Peloton feuilleton.
Good point!
We had two at 3,000 each bought with our stolen identity. That was the first and largest theft. They were delivered to another state. We were not held responsible. Thank Heaven! Had 2 different kinds after that. Also fixed. I have a folder holder just for ID thefts and instructions on what to do, as soon as you’re ‘billed’.
The one I’m expecting to get a lot of hacking done to it is that “Mirror” thing, if only by pervert voyeurs.
You seen the commercials?
Hacker: Keep running or we blow up you and the bike!
Hacker: Type in your credit and debit card or we only display “The View” tv show!
Anything that connects to a network can behave like a server. Exercise bikes are no exception. Even many drones run TCP/IP services.
And these bikes are going to connect to a host machine or server farm somewhere.
