The problem was compounded by the fact that some of the race routes have been held on extremely narrow roads, so narrow that the riders staged a protest a couple of days ago. The extreme narrowness of the road forces the rides to occupy the entire width of the road, with not an inch to spare.

Narrow roads are ok on mountain stages when the peloton (the main pack of riders) breaks up and gets stretched thin, but are dangerous in sprint stages on relatively flat terrain where the peloton remains largely intact throughout the race.

That’s really cheesy that the tour started calling it a peleton by stealing it from that online exercise bike company.
