Fun fact, the Buddy Sorrell character on Dick Van Dyke was loosely based on Mel Brooks’ real life persona (minus Pickles).

Buddy Sorrell was played by Morey Amsterdam. Always one of my favorite characters in early TV.

A few years ago a restaurant had a Morey Amsterdam sandwich. I didn’t even look to see what was on it, just ordered it.

About 35 years ago, I came to know an old man in his 80’s. He went by the name Hal Hamilton. That was the name his agent gave him when he hit the vaudeville circuit.

Hal was a living, breathing Morey Amsterdam. Even as he was in the hospital he was popping one liners.

He was a jew who late in life became a born again Christian. Once Vaudeville ended he moved to Detroit where we met at church.
