I thought people already got vaccinated against smallpox, back when they were kids.

They stopped vaccinating in the late 70’s, early 80’s worldwide, and in the early 70’s in the US. Most people under age 50 are not vaccinated.
The vaccinate some in the military due to bioterrorism threats.
I believe the last case of smallpox was in Africa.

Was vaccinated back in the 60’s...
Also again during the run-up to Operation Iraqi Freedom in ‘03. There was rather a large hullabaloo about possible contamination (didn’t call it “shedding” back then) from the vaccine site, especially if it was an open sore or oozing.
IIRC, it was a number of stabbing motions with a needle, not one single shot.
With all of the other shots received (Anthrax series comes to mind), I’m surprised that we didn’t have more folks on sick call.
