From the beginning of creation there was a darkness, a void. God created light to separate the light from the darkness. Satan started as an angel, but his jealousy and refusal to put himself under the light caused him to make war against God. He was cast out of the holiness of heaven and sent to wander the earth. Mankind was given authority over the earth by His Creator, to have dominion and primacy over it as a caretaker and it was good.
In a cunning plan, Satan thought if he could get man to sin based on his advice, he would assume the authority over creation and win back what he had lost. So, by cunning and deceit he caused mankind to sin and thus separating man from the holiness and presence of the Creator and light. Darkness ruled the world.
However, God refused to let mankind die in his darkness to ever be separated from Himself so He sent his own trained warrior Son to become a man and do what no other man could. It was the Son's obedience and love for His Father that caused Him to leave his heavenly home. So He became a man, born under the law which separated man from God and came close to the sinners with spiritual weapons to cast out demonic oppression to heal and to restore to temporal health. But mankind had no way to be restored to God, the law condemned all, for all had sinned!
The devil thought if he could stir up enough hatred in this war, he could kill the other warrior and retain his position as ruler of this world. And so, when Pilate asked Jesus why he would not answer him, Pilate said don't you know that I have the power to crucify you? He scourged Jesus' back with a whip with stones in it, he opened his back with stripes, he abused Jesus body and as prophesied, “the chastisement of our peace was upon Him” and “by His stripes we are healed”. But this Warrior's love made him lay down his power to save himself for “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin”, a perfect man willingly sacrificed for the imperfect.
Rejected by the leaders and religious authorities, they nailed his body to the cross thinking the war was won by their hatred, yet it was love that was winning this war. Jesus cried out “Father, forgive them they know not what they have done”. God the Father turned away from His beloved Son and poured out all His righteous anger over man's sin on Him. Enduring it all, “it is finished” Jesus cried and gave up His life, as the law required the death of the condemned.
The Jews, in ultimate hypocrisy, wanted the body off the cross for the sabbath and told the soldiers to break His legs so He could not use them to push up and breathe with. But Jesus was already dead. He gave up His life, no one took it from Him. So, a soldier put his spear into Jesus' side, and out poured water and blood, again in accordance with prophecy, which was a sign we know today that His heart had congestive failure, He died of a broken Heart.
He was dead. That was the victory Satan thought he won.
It was the love of a warrior who gave his life for many and with the washing of that water and that sinless blood, the veil of the temple was ripped in two, signifying the end of the performance of the law and the beginning of abundant life by the free gift of God, salvation by faith in the work of Jesus on the cross. When mankind accepts this washing away of sin, he now can come to the holiness of God, God knows the blood of His own Son and all who place their trust in Him, He receives now as sons and daughters.
Thank you. Beautiful, yet crushingly painful in a way!
Praise God that He would sacrifice so much for us!
