Lake Shore Drive renamed to honor DuSable

Chicago’s most iconic and picturesque roadway has a new name — and it’s a mouthful of history: Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

The Black man of Haitian descent who was Chicago’s first non-indigenous settler finally got the honor his champions say he has long deserved, thanks to an on-again, off-again compromise that was back on again — and approved — at a City Council meeting Friday.

Three Hispanic aldermen joined 12 white aldermen in voting against the compromise.

There is some justification to purging Lindbergh. He was a Nazi supporter and even received a medal from Hitlers regime.

He was somewhat sympathetic to Nazi views on race, no doubt. And he was certainly against our getting involved in the war since he was sure that Britain could not stand against Germany.

On the other hand, he received his medal while checking out the Luftwaffe pretty much at the request of our government and the Nazis were only too glad to show him just about everything he wanted to see.

When war was declared, he immediately requested to go back into the Army Air Force, but FDR would not allow it to happen. He actually (as a civilian) flew fighters in the Pacific and shot down at least one Japanese plane. He also taught pilots how to extend the range of their planes, something he really did know a thing or two about.

BION I'm comfortable with "Willis Tower" and "Guaranteed Rate Field" (or for that matter "US Cellular Field" which some people shortened to "the Cell Phone"), though I wouldn't have minded the continuation of "Sears Tower" and "Comiskey Park".
