FIU professor: Collapsed Surfside building showed signs of subsidence in ‘90s (Champlain Towers - Miami)

FIU professor: Collapsed Surfside building showed signs of subsidence in ‘90s

The area where a building partially collapsed in Surfside, Fla. showed signs of land subsidence in the 1990s, according to space-based radar data analyzed by an FIU professor.

The 2020 study conducted by FIU Institute of Environment Professor Shimon Wdowinski identified the 12-story Champlain Towers South condominium as the one place on the east side of the barrier island where land subsidence was detected from 1993 to 1999. But land subsidence in and of itself likely would not cause a building’s collapse, according to Wdowinski, an expert in space geodesy, natural hazards and sea level rise.

“When we measure subsidence or when we see movement of the buildings, it’s worth checking why it happens,” Wdowinski said. “We cannot say what is the reason for that from the satellite images but we can say there was movement here.”

Western Miami Beach saw subsidence over larger areas but that was expected because homes there are built on reclaimed wetland. Areas where land is subsiding are more likely to experience more serious effects of sea level rise, according to the study.

n the 1990s, Miami Beach experienced subsidence at the rate of 1-3 millimeters per year, which could add up to a few inches of movement over a decade, Wdowinski said. It was significantly slower compared to other parts of the planet Wdowinski has studied. Mexico City, for example, is subsiding at a rate of 15 inches per year.

The researcher believes the same technology he used to detect land subsidence could be used to detect vulnerable buildings and help prevent future catastrophes.

The study was published in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management."

“More likely inferior mafia concrete.”

I am wondering if it was made on site with sea water.

“This is not a state issue.”

Has Biden chimed in yet? I won’t know what to think until His Excellency tells us what to think.

“Paid off building inspector?”

A lot of that came out after Andrew.

Subsidence and faulting due to ground water extraction has been going on on the Gulf Coast since we started drilling wells.

When you pull the water out of the interstitial spaces, the sediment contracts.

The Houston Galveston area has places that are or were subsiding a few inches per year (causing slip faults) and I don’t see why it would be any different in Florida.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s there was a building boom and much shoddy workmanship happening.

Mr. mm’s parents bought into a condo association but kept abreast of the construction details very closely.

They were very particular and I always pitied the contractor they hired for a job.

Probably used chinese rebar and materials. and illegal Mexican and other 3rd world labor.

I’ve read interesting engineering, real estate and assorted speculation online today and nothing seems to click in my mind. If it’s about bad rebar and/or concrete and building materials, or construcing tall buildings on sand, this should happen more often. It doesn’t. What makes THIS building different from alllll the other tall buildings on the beach? Different enough to make it collapse? It’s just bizarre and freakish.

The collapse may be linked to all the Roofing materials and
equipment left on the Roof .
The building well known structural issues were triggered .

Maybe the Roofing materials and equipment lift to one corner of the roof of a 40 yr old building set it off .

"1-3 millimeters per year, which could add up to a few inches of movement over a decade, Wdowinski said..."

I don't have much faith in "scientists" who try to make sensational statements which are not supported by their own data. Unless Wdowinski is using some kind of new math, over a decade at 1-3 millimeters per year the total movement would be from 10 to 30 millimeters. That is a movement of from .39 inches to 1.18 inches.

I guess in the new math 1.18 is "a few inches".

This makes more sense to me. I expect it will be a perfect storm of factors, but this new construction and drilling seems possible.

"What makes THIS building different from alllll the other tall buildings on the beach? "

This particular building was the first one to be constructed after a moratorium on building was lifted in the late 70's. Water and sewer systems were a problem...and underground.

Maybe all the other buildings around it that were built after...were built with "lessons learned" from the first one after the upgrades?

Perhaps relevant, perhaps not. See #27

Yup, looking more and more like an unfortunately "perfect storm" of factors coming together.

Thankfully, it's exceedingly rare.

This doesn't happen in this country like it does in others....but that's not to say it's impossible here.

The Video of the collapse came from the new building cameras .
The former mayor who got rescued complained about the cracking from the new construction.

I concur with your comments. About the same age. Lived my entire life in coastal Florida. Absolutely no evidence of sea level change.

"Smells like FBI disinformation."

The FIU professor who wrote this study published in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management, is FBI? What about his co-author, the Italian professor working in Ireland? Co-Conspirator?
