"During Wednesday's meeting, CDC researchers said the benefits of vaccination were clear. For every million second-dose vaccinations, there may be tens of myocarditis cases, but thousands of Covid-19 cases prevented, the CDC said.

The myocarditis risk is higher for boys than girls. Among adolescent boys ages 12 to 17, CDC researchers estimate that for every 1 million second-dose vaccinations, 5,700 Covid-19 cases, 215 hospitalizations, 71 intensive care unit admissions and two deaths would be prevented. It's estimated there might be 56 to 69 myocarditis cases (but no deaths from them)."

For all older age groups (male of female), the benefits of vaccination increasingly outweigh risks from myocarditis, the older the group.

Worth consideration...

Since US & Israel seeing more cases of myocarditis in young with 2nd dose & use 3 weeks spacing - whereas UK uses 8-12 weeks & not seeing the number of cases of myocarditis- increasing that spacing between doses could help. Prior tweets - 1 dose Pfizer 94% effective against delta”

i believe the 3 week spacing was chosen as the earliest possible- to speed up the trials.

Of course I don’t generally approve of vaxxing the young anyway.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine effective against variants: study

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine produces several immune responses allowing it to be effective against different variants of the virus, according to a study released Wednesday.

The research, published in Nature as an accelerated article preview, determined that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine activated immune responses against the original COVID-19 strain, as well as the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Epsilon variants.

The study concluded that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine “offered strong protection against symptomatic” cases of COVID-19 in South Africa and Brazil where variants have caused most sequenced cases.

Researchers studied the antibody and cellular immune responses of 20 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 55.

The study did find that less neutralizing antibodies appeared when fighting against the Beta and Gamma variants, first found in South Africa and Brazil, respectively, when compared to the original COVID-19 strain.

Those with the Beta strain produced five-times fewer neutralizing antibodies than those with the original strain. For the Gamma variant, people developed 3.3 times less of these antibodies.

But the non-neutralizing antibody and T cell immune responses were “largely preserved” and made up for it when combating the variants, which researchers said indicated how these immune responses could protect against COVID-19 and its variants.

The study determined that a single dose of Johnson & Johnson protected against severe COVID-19 in 86 percent of participants in the U.S., 88 percent of those in Brazil and 82 percent in South Africa.

[[[ Not enough information on the new Delta variant, afaik, for any of the vaccines. Presumably they will help but it’s early. ]]]

Notice "patients are younger."

Unvaccinated Americans are at risk of a possibly more dangerous Covid-19 variant. These are the most vulnerable states
By Madeline Holcombe, CNN
Updated 0019 GMT (0819 HKT) June 22, 2021
https://edition.cnn.com/2021/06/21/us/us-coronavirus-monday/index.html

[Excerpt:]

In Springfield, Missouri, the low rate of vaccinations combined with the Delta variant has led to a six-fold increase in hospitalizations at CoxHealth, a health care system there, according to its CEO, Steve Edwards.

Over the past four and a half weeks, the number of patients has risen from around 14 to 83, Edwards told CNN on Monday, adding that the patients are younger and have more severe disease than previously — and almost all are unvaccinated.

The Delta variant made up about 10% of cases that were tested three or four weeks ago, he said. “As of last week, it appeared to be 90%.”

“I think it is the Delta variant, and there is a lot of kindling with low vaccination rates, so it’s spreading very rapidly.”

This influx has put new pressures on his staff, Edwards said, compared to previous outbreaks.

Thanks. I searched for vaccine efficacy against Delta variant but data is scant.

In a perverse sort of way, the fact that Fauci seems to have a bias against the JNJ/Janssen vaccine makes me trust it the most ;-)

Back when they launched, I figured the JNJ would be by far the most widely deployed. One and done, not mRNA, and much easier to distribute and store in a regular medical refrigerator. But then they pulled it from the market for 4-6 weeks; that on top of production and supply problems put a pall over it.

FWIW, I spent nearly the whole day yesterday helping a friend try to get the JNJ vaccine. We called the pharmacy where another person got the JNJ vaccine 2 days earlier, they said they had it but when we showed up they said they had no vaccines at all. Went to another pharmacy only had Moderna. Called Wal-Mart, directed to some hotline for vaccines and the guy on the phone told us the two closest to us had no inventory but one had all 3 in stock. We drove there but when we arrived we were told they had zero of anything in stock but said come back tomorrow they were expecting a shipment but didn’t know which vaccine would come in the shipment (I imagine WalMart has better logistical information on graham crackers than they do the vaccine). Went to another Wal-Mart same story. Went to Walgreens, nothing in stock. Went to another pharmacy, only Moderna. We decided to call it quits and drive her home, but a lark we passed a supermarket so why not walk in and check. They had it, had dispensed 3 of the 4 doses from the vial so one left. Hurrah! But, the pharmacist came back and said “sorry, it expired 45 minutes ago we have to throw it away, but come back in the morning and we’ll break open a fresh vial”.
