The geographic sizes of the offensives on both sides of the Eastern Front boggles my mind.

The distance between Lenningrad to the north and Stalingrad to the south is close to 1,000 miles.

The Polish/Soviet border to Moscow is 600 miles.

The equivalent area in the US would be an advance from Washington DC to Illinois with a north-south front extending from Green-Bay to New Orleans.

Yup. However, over a century before (with only horses), Napoleon DID invade Russia and managed to capture Moscow. However, it was a pyric victory, as the Russians stripped Moscow of anything that could sustain the French army. After about a month, Napoleon and his Grand Army had to retreat. By the time he got out of Russia, his force had been reduced from 400,000 (at the start) to about 10,000 men. The Russian campaign was Napoleon’s Waterloo before Waterloo.
