In Joe Halderman's "Forever War" a few months would pass in faster-than-light space flight to a battle, but decades or even centuries would pass on Earth due to Relativity. Each time our hero got back to Earth things were different.
The first time he came back the soldier noticed his brother was wearing makeup and flouncing around. The next time homosexuality was rampant. Third time it was mandatory - babies were test tube only. All this was due to UN Policies to control population size.

Service connected disability right? If they got their balls shot off in battle might be the cheaper way to go.
