That is an awesome story! I come from a family of four and before my Dad was deployed to Europe, he went out to purchase a car. My Mom thought he’d come back with a small sedan but he arrived in a blue and white 1975 Plymouth Voyager window van. Enormous compared to many cars on Europe’s roads. We spent 6 years in Europe and drove that thing all over the place. I have some great memories of our adventures and a few visa stamps from countries that no longer exist.
It’s amazing how a car, truck, or van can be an anchor for so many memories.
I feel bad for many kids today as they don’t seem to have the same enthusiasm for driving that I remember having. Some are opting to not get their license and just Uber around.
That was what struck me-when I thought of that 1964 white Chrysler New Yorker wagon with that red interior, the memories came flooding back.
Ask any guy about their cars...the family car, the one they first drove, their first car of their own...you are sure to get a story!
I first drove my Scoutmaster's pickup truck with a cab, to drive it on the base to my house where I was going to detail it for $7.00. I was thirteen...:) He just handed me the keys.
I got my first formal driving lessons from my Mom in my Dad's 1971 Plymouth Cricket!
When I got my license, my family had a 1972 Chevrolet Greenbriar station wagon that could go 120 mph...I know from experience!
But best of all-I got nearly sole access to a 1966 Dodge van, white roof with desert turquoise sides with a wide white stripe on each side going fore and aft. It had been set up as a camper with a pop up top, and as a 16 1/2 year old with a new license...I had use of it for my own! It was a glorious vehicle for and adolescent boy with a license! It had a slant six, and the automatic shifter protruded from the dashboard. how I loved that van! We had so many good times in it!
Then, as a young sailor, I bought my first car-a 1976 MG Midget that was chartreuse green, which I came to love!
Good times!
