When you reduce the complex issues that led to the tragic War Between the States to a simpleton statement like “Republicans freeing the Democrat’s slaves”, you take “dumbing down” to a whole new level.

I didn’t reduce anything of the kind. I quite realize the issues that led to the war are complex, but I was stating the obvious effect of the war. Northerners did not go to war to free the slaves. There were riots in the North over the very idea. But, when the war came to an end, so did slavery.

We are stuck with this holiday, like it or not. And I have no doubt that this will be seen by most to be a ‘black’ holiday. I don’t think it hurts to remind people that for the most part, the slaves did not free themselves but were freed by the political party that we are told that most slave descendants apparently despise.

As an aside with no significance, yesterday my wife asked the teller at the bank if it would be closing early today. The teller had no idea that Congress had passed and Biden had signed into law a new ‘holiday’. Of course those who don’t get enthusiastically on board with it will be deemed ‘racist’.
