US Supreme Court blocks child slavery lawsuit against chocolate firms

The US Supreme Court has ruled food giants Nestlé USA and Cargill can't be sued for child slavery on African farms from where they buy their cocoa.

Six African men alleged that they were trafficked from Mali and forced to work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast.

The group say both companies perpetuated that slave trade to keep cocoa prices low.

The court ruled 8-1 that the group had no standing because the abuse happened outside the US.

But it stopped short of a definitive ruling on whether the Alien Tort Act - an 18th century law - could be used to hold US companies to account for labour abuses committed in their supply chains abroad.

About 70% of the world's cocoa is produced in West Africa, and much of this is exported to America.

It's estimated that 1.56m children work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast and Ghana, according to a report published by the US Department of Labor last year.

In their lawsuit, the group of men alleged that they were forced to work on the cocoa farms for 12-14 hours a day. They also said they were kept under armed guard while they slept, in order to prevent them from escaping, and were paid little beyond basic food.

This is going to hammer the suits against gun makers for making guns that people use to kill with by misplacing the responsibility, even knowingly, for the actions of others. And this is going to create a direct line to the actual perps that caused the crime. A victory for the 2nd amendment.

What was it biden said? Oh yeah, “cultural differences”.
Even humongous companies like Nestle & Cargill cannot be expected to try to change these “cultural differences” in other nations.
Besides, we all know that only white Europeans enslaved Africans. And Mali ain't in Europe.

Alito is the only dissent.

The one thing that unites the rest of the liberals and conservatives is that they will always protect the megacorps. Otherwise it would make things awkward at the country club when they meet the CEOs.

And Mali ain’t in Europe.

Just ask any kid these days - where in Europe is Mali located? Some might say Italy, others would ask: what’s a Europe ...

Wait, slavery? I thought slavery was caused by white racists, the KKK or Republicans. Do we have to pay them reparations, too?

Over the last couple years, there have been two or three lengthy reports from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, which is a highly regarded Aussie defense think-tank, that chronicled the plight of the Uyghurs and the slave trade that oppresses them. Make no mistake; Uyghurs are bought and sold in China. Full-on chattel slavery enjoys ROBUST existence in China.

One of the reports detailed the Western companies that benefit directly from Uyghur slaves. The length of that list was absolutely amazing. Apple, Nike, Levi Strauss just scratch the surface.

Interestingly, while ASPI enjoys a close working relationship with the US DoD including being the recipient of grant money from time to time, none of these reports garnered any publicity in the US. It was a total news blackout. I’ve never heard a US politician from any party ever bring it up. Those corporate donors apparently expect something from those campaign contributions and that something is silence.
