SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday signed an emergency proclamation to free up additional energy capacity amid California's scorching heat wave.
With another Flex Alert called by the state grid operator for Friday evening, Newsom's proclamation suspends certain permitting requirements. The order allows the use of back-up power generation and frees up additional energy capacity to help alleviate the heat-induced demands on the state’s energy grid.
Much of the Western United States is seeing triple digit heat. In the Bay Area, cooling centers have opened to alleviate those who may be without air conditioning or who need shelter from the soaring temperatures.
Despite improvements to the California electrical grid, the state still imports a lot of power from other Western States during peak demands.
Right now, the biggest threat to the grid is cranking up the air-conditioning. A/C can quickly put excessive demand on the system, leading to stress on local electricity distribution equipment.
In prolonged heat waves, some older power equipment simply cannot cool down and fails from a technical kind of heat stroke.

I wonder how the pioneers survived? Or even our parents?
Last week my wife was at her mom’s house for a few days. The AC went out during a mid 90’s heat wave. Uncomfortable? Sure
They survived.
they deliberately limit energy supplies?
are they deliberately creating the brown outs?
lawsuits should be filed as brown outs threaten lives.
I recall my mom and her friends filling up wash tubs in the back yard and dangle their legs in them ....while sipping on
Rolling rock Beer in one hand and a hand held fan in the other.
We had an old 10 room Victorian house so she’d open the windows all night to cool things down and close it up during the day....As kids we survived!
to free up additional energy capacity//
When I read that at the top of the story
I thought maybe gavin pulled his head
out of nanzies butt and quit peeing our
hydro electric water straight into the ocean
and started using our resevoir system as designed
But then I read the rest and it appears, no,
he’s spending money to buy electricity
from other states.
So his head must still be
up nanzies butt.
Got to be some rice bowls involved somewhere
is my guess.

I grew up in southern Arizona in the 60’s. Almost everyone had “swamp coolers” and very few homes had air conditioning. The motels that had air conditioning advertised on their signs out front. The only buildings that had refrigerated air were large commercial buildings. When it got really hot, we would go downtown and hang out in the department stores or go to one of the parks that had a pool. We survived.
I spent 30 years in the power business. I don’t ever recall having to beg a governor for permission to turn on a power plant. This is so pathetic.
Tell them to stop charging cars during daylight hours.
