Herb signed his last contract. RIP Mr. Bonner.

RIP. I watched an interview with him and he seemed to be that very interesting and thoughtful person and I am aware of his becoming a director. That now has him and Gordon Jump and Carol Bruce as dearly departed WKRP cast members.

I always loved how that show reflected the real world of radio. As a former radio DJ, I worked with every one of these characters: The annoying sales guy (Herb), the rebel DJ (Johnny Fever), the laid-back common-sense DJ (Venus), the young program director full of ideas (Andy), the nerdy newsman (Les), the clueless station owner (Mr. Carlson), the unassuming traffic director (Bailey), and the receptionist who kept the place running (Jennifer).

If you ever worked in the broadcasting salt mines—as I did—you knew someone like Herb. Mr. Bonner played that part to a “T.” R.I.P.

The question, though, is....Jennifer or Bailey?

Some of the classic WKRPs were when Herb tried to “seduce” the photographer to get back Jennifer’s nude pictures and when Herb had to talk Les of the ledge because one of the Bengals thought Les was a homosexual. (Herb’s response was hilarious...”A ‘homo’ sexual???”)

I once saw him in an auto-repair shop in the San Fernando Valley, a few years after WKRP (a terrific show, BTW) ended.. No loud suits, just a guy waiting for his car to be repaired.

Good show with a tight cast. Sparky Anderson getting fired....again. Cincinnati Stingers bumper sticker on the wall. The turkey scene. And oh those posters of rock bands and albums. Les mispronouncing the Soviet visitor as Popa-son-of-a-bitch was very funny. Jennifer in that bluish dress. Cute Bailey. Cool Venus. Johnny the anti-hero. And Herb being Herb.

Rest in peace.
