In 1919 Boston, a molasses storage tank failed causing a 2.3 million gallon river of molasses to flow through the streets killing 21 and injuring 150.

As recently as the 1980s, certain streets in Boston's North End would still get sticky on hot days and the air would smell of molasses as left over syrup would bubble up through the cobblestones.

Perhaps urban legend but I remember being told about it back in the day.
