Doctors who work in Arizona and Nevada burn centers are warning of injuries from contact with super-heated roadways and other surfaces as the first extreme heat wave of the year extends across the U.S. West.
A high pressure system is expected to push temperatures above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 Celsius) this week in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Health officials advised people to be mindful of hot asphalt, sidewalks and even desert sand.

Good argument to use concrete for roads surfaces rather than asphalt. That black coating just absorbs the heat and radiates it back.

We knew this as kids back in 1955, Moab Utah where the streets were so hot we barefoot kids danced across the pavement trying to get to the cooler concrete sidewalks.

Nothing new. It is the Great American Desert and has been known to be extremely hot in the past.
In the book ON THE BORDER WITH CROOK, by Bourke, he tells of many of the hot jokes from Phoenix back in the 1870s, such as the desert rat who died and went to hell. He begged the devil to let him return to Phoenix to get his blankets because, after living in Arizona, hell was too cold for him.
I’ve seen it so hot in the past that the asphalt sticks to the tires and is pulled out of the roadbed in chunks.
The heat was brutal during THE COMING ICE AGE hoax of the 1970s.
