I don't know this woman but she sounds like a follower. She likely follows many people on Instagram, Twitter, and Pintrest.
This article is a plea for understanding and support which she apparently found from other 'followers'.
It sounds to me like she was following the herd in adopting a dog because it was trending on Twitter without thinking things through.

That sums it up perfectly. Following is sometimes the smart thing - like when merging into a traffic circle. Sometimes you need to go with the flow.
But far too many people just follow trends all the time and listen to “experts” rather than think for themselves.
There are a lot of bad people out there ready to take advantage - and nature is full of traps for “followers”.
In a Wild West type society, these people wouldn’t last very long, and only the independent thinkers would survive.
In a Democracy, these people put us all at risk with their stupidity.
