The U.S. women’s national team is running out of new accomplishments. Creating fresh mountains to climb becomes the only remaining challenge for the most successful team in women’s international soccer. The USWNT owns four World Cups, eight CONCACAF gold medals and four Olympic gold medals. It medaled in every major tournament from 1991 to 2015.
The USWNT achieves more history on Wednesday night when the world champions host Nigeria at 8 p.m. in the first soccer match ever played at Q2 Stadium, the home of Austin FC. The match is part of Olympic preparations and is the last of a three-game summer series that began last week in Houston with wins over Jamaica and Portugal.
“We’re honored and thankful for the opportunity to be the first ones to play at the new stadium,” USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski told reporters on Tuesday afternoon. “It is important to be in areas that the game is growing, and we have a responsibility to help grow the game as much as possible.”
