"Catfishing" is a term that's new to me but sounds like it's been around a while. Supposedly it is slang for a man trying to sexually entice another man by posing as a woman.

That said, I remember there used to be a baseball pitcher back in the 1970s named Catfish Hunter. Now I'm wondering how he got his nickname.

Charley Finley gave Hunter the nickname. Apparently the boss felt his ball players needed a catchy nickname to help draw crowds. He also came up with Blue Moon for John Odom.

He was a great man.

The answer is simple.

Finley gave Hunter the nickname “Catfish” in 1965 because he thought his 19-year-old pitcher needed a flashy nickname.
A story circulated that Hunter’s family gave him the nickname as a child when he went missing and was later found with a string of catfish; there is no truth to that explanation

—”Catfish Hunter”

I had to look it up.

Finley gave Hunter the nickname “Catfish” in 1965 because he thought his 19-year-old pitcher needed a flashy nickname.[1][2] A story circulated that Hunter’s family gave him the nickname as a child when he went missing and was later found with a string of catfish; there is no truth to that explanation.
