If the right to bear arms was intended to preserve slavery, why did civil-rights leaders insist that black Americans should be armed to protect themselves?

Left-wing academic Carol Anderson’s new book, The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America, is all over the news. “The Second Amendment is not about guns — it’s about anti-Blackness, a new book argues,” reads a CNN headline. NPR claims that the author has uncovered the racist “roots” of the Second Amendment.

Left-wing academic Carol Anderson’s new book, The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America, is all over the news. “The Second Amendment is not about guns — it’s about anti-Blackness, a new book argues,” reads a CNN headline. NPR claims that the author has uncovered the racist “roots” of the Second Amendment.

This is wishful thinking. The Second is an attempt — much like the 1619 Project — to reimagine history in purely racial terms. The result is tendentious polemic that suffers not only from a paucity of historical evidence, but from a dishonest rendering of the facts we do know.

After every shooting the left becomes more convinced that there must be gun control, and gun owners become more convinced that they must resist. The gun grabbers imagine a world without guns, where gun owners imagine a world where innocents are protected by force of arms. Who is being the most realistic?

You are absolutely correct— the organization started by two Union Army generals to defend the right to keep and bear arms, to train people in their use, later to increase marksmanship training and safety— for ALL people, and in the initial start up it was to defend the right for former slaves to defend themselves against the Democrat machine— the first klan and its winding down and eventual closing down (by- Nathan Bedford Forrest as achieving its goals then). The second clan (the pinnacle of national membership in the 2 million range- was formed headquartered in Indiana (a Union state, and nationally no longer exclusively southern states).

When the second klan came along the NRA expanded its membership again in response. And... bipartisan in those days as today. Have tried explaining this to leftist loonie whites— and they just don’t get it, but then, they are just virtue signalling to cover their bigotry against blacks.

I had a Jr High history book that I taught from years ago. One page showed a painted scene of a black family’s shack. I’d tell the kids, “Look at this closely. Does it show freemen or slaves?” The key to the right answer, which the kids never seemed to get, was the shotgun propped up next to the door. Freemen can be armed; slaves cannot.

I worked on the Tom Scott (CT Independence Party) campaign in 1994. The head of the party was Wayne Howard (R.I.P.). Besides being a lifetime gun advocate and NRA member heading a gun rights party, he was also a noted comic book artist/creator in the '70s.

He would be surprised to find out that the Second Amendment was an anti-black thing.

Sure as shootin', that'll trigger a bunch of b!tching & moaning about "Wayne's suits" and "why won't the NRA run educational infomercials" (as if anybody on the planet watches those things). In the future, you might call them "the predecessors to the GOA" - the guys who complain the loudest don't seem to have heard of the GOA, so maybe it won't set 'em off...
