Here is the reality on the ground. US new electric generating capacity in 2020:

The renewables + natural gas mix is the only game in town right now. It is so much cheaper than any alternative. that there is no rational case for anything else.

There is no rational case for renewables if you have to build duplicate power generating capacity to back them up (and you do).

there is no rational case for anything else. The only rational case is nuclear and I don't see a rush to that technology. Americans drive 3 trillion miles a year and we will never produce enough electricity to drive those miles with any other known technology other than nuclear. We can produce maybe 1/10 the electricity needed to drive 3 trillion miles. Since they aren't building nukes you can bet they aren't serious about switching.
