Nations League final in Denver between the United States and Mexico was marred by unruly fan behavior that included objects thrown onto the field and a brief pause in the game because of fans using an anti-gay chant.
Referee John Pitti resumed the match after three minutes as players on both sides pleaded with the crowd to stop using the chant.
This was the second tournament match to be halted due to anti-gay chants at Empower Field at Mile High. Mexico's semifinal win over Costa Rica was also briefly paused. That match also saw several fans ejected from the stadium
Should the chant continue to be used, the referee has the authority to send the players to the locker rooms and can also call for the match to be abandoned.

I thought it was spelled “puta”, but I could be wrong.
lol
It’s an ‘o’ on the end because it refers to a male.
Spanish speakers tell me that it’s not realy homophobic. The closest translation would be “bitch” or “fucker” or “whore”, there are homophobic words just like any other language but this isn’t one of them. So please stop with the nonsense.
From the game context it sounds like “homo” to me. Implying the goal keeper is weak, gay, etc., when he kicks the ball.
—”“PUTO!””
I think you may be off on the gender or something?
I only eked by on a couple of semisters of Spanish.
Later A very smart and fun Tex-Mex guy who worked for me attempted to teach me some Spanish.
Unfortunately, Señor G. was the very worst Spanish teacher ever! After over ten years I learned almost nothing!!!
But he was a very good worker and a nice guy so no way would I fire him.
I guarantee if Poland played the US in Chicago, the crowd would at least 80% for Poland.
Heck even in Britain when Scotland played England at Wembley the crowd was overwhelming for Scotland.
It’s much better than it was 20 years ago. 90%+ of those in attendance would have been Mexican fans then. Today you see some central americans like Hondurans rooting for the US because nobody likes Mexico either. Haha.
I watched the game, too. The announcers tried to make it sound like it was American fans creating an international display of hatred, when in all likelihood, it was the Mexican fans attending who were hurling the usual insults.
Soccer is well-known for its hooligan fans. The fans of the teams despise each other just like football fans can. They are loud and noisy.
Having said that, there is a special animus from Mexican fans towards American players. I’ve been told personally by several players that they hated going into Mexico City for games, even “friendlies” because the fans there throw bags filled with urine (and worse) on our players. It’s dangerous, but it’s been this way for YEARS.
I was surprised to watch the refs pause the game for these antics. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen them do such a thing. I think they wanted this to be the first occurrence, so as to suggest that Americans are despicable.
So glad we won last night.
I could’ve sworn it ends with an “a” for the female. My Hispanic friends always said it translated to “whore” and was a female put-down. I suppose if they used an O, it could mean that the guy is whored out like a female.
“So cheerful, in fact, that I got separated from my party and found myself surrounded by some good-natured City fans who decided to express their good-naturedness by punching me in the side of the head.
About as exciting as watching golf or paint dry. No wonder they get drunk and unruly- completely bored out of their minds.
Yours is a common complaint of someone who doesn’t understand the game, and doesn’t want to try to understand it. To each his own.
Mine is a common complaint of an American who has lived long enough to know better.
PS we played the stupid game in junior high and watched a nice girl in my class get her shin broken during PE.
I’m all too familiar with the game.
No that was elementary school 6th grade.
Sister of Randy Hughs used to play defense for Dallas Cowboys.
And Sooners.
The word ‘maricón’ is prominently directed at the opposing team and fans.
