A man who went missing after a hike on the La Luz Trail was found dead Friday.

Authorities said 20-year-old Brandon Foster went hiking shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. At about 4:45 p.m. he sent a picture to his family from the trail. That was the last time they heard from him.

Crews searched overnight on the ground and also used the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office helicopter and drones in the search.

The cause of Foster's death has not been released.

I learned the hard way, Jasper, to never leave the travels. You can get lost as little as fifty feet from where you started wandering off.

I tried to take a shortcut, because I saw a road that would have dropped me 200 feet in elevation. That road disappeared on me. I got lucky, because my phone had just enough power to get me to another road and then it died.

AS one young Donner Party survivor said something to the effect, “Don’t take no shortcuts.” Though this almost certainly not a case of starvation or exposure. Homicide, accident or an encounter with wildlife. As Kurt Vonnegut said, if you think nature is your friend, you don’t need enemies.

I’m guessing suicide. The pic he sent was his goodby.

wow, i had not thought of that. Very sad for the family whatever way he died.

I know someone who did similar to what you guessed happened, similar age. Mind over took and couldn’t see any other way out, but there are other answers, and always Jesus for when we run out of our own strength, ability etc.

prayers for this family and all involved in helping determine what happened.

I’ve hiked the part of that trail that runs along the crest. It’s fairly level, but you can still get winded because you’re at almost 12,000 feet in elevation.

No telling what happened to this guy. The La Luz trail would be hard to get lost on, you can't lose sight of the city as you climb.
When I was 11-12 yrs old in the early sixties myself and a few neighbor boys would get canteens and a few sandwiches and hike to the foot of Sandia Crest and start up the La Luz trail to the very top at the observation deck. I can see folks maybe falling if they got careless, but getting lost? That would be hard to imagine.

Spent my childhood in view of the Sandias.
