If the expression is indeed a departure from etiquette, then the price one pays for that departure is that you cannot expect the accepted response. I am convinced that those who casually change the rules of etiquette do so because they
understand neither the what nor the why of it.
Just as you know that Webster’s Dictionary is a standard for adding vocabulary words, and the NY Times Manual of Style for grammar changes, you know there must be some similar standard for etiquette changes. I suggest in the absence of Miss Manners, Judith Martin, that everyone use me for this purpose. Do not fear the imposition upon me. I assure you it’s no problem.
