They are not “skinny,” not for modern dairy cattle. The lighting is just unusual, it would make even chunkier beef cattle show a little rib. You just normally would never see light coming from that angle.

You can be a BOY Dairy breed. But, unless you’re good breeding stock, you’re future is in a Hamburger. ;)

We are currently raising a Steer (a Bull who has been castrated) that is a cross between a Holstein dairy cow and a Black Angus beef bull. His name is ‘Weber’ and he was a cull from the dairy farmer next farm over.

Somebody jumped the fence! ;)

Had a lot of fun rounding Weber up today as ‘someone’ left the latch off the gate when he left for work this morning. Close call with him in my food garden. Bull in a China Shop! Mama is NOT a Happy Camper, today. Weber is too big for Veal Parmesan but also not big enough to shoot yet!

Is a castrated bull called an ox?

Yes, a castrated bull is called a Steer when it’s going to be raised for meat and they call a castrated bull an Ox when they are trained and used as a draft animal to pull carts or wagons or a plow. Castrating them keeps them more docile and easier to train and/or raise for food. Genus ‘Bos.’

Weber thinks he’s a dog, and the hunting dogs think he’s a Black bear, so it’s pretty interesting around here some days. He escaped today, but after a few hours or grazing around the house yard, he was ready to go back in the barn yard with his face in a bucket of sweet oats. ;)

Weber’s predecessors were ‘Dinner’ and ‘Supper.’ Next steer will be named ‘Chuck’ (roast.) ;)
