Brown Bears lived in California until about a century ago. The Californian Republic was known colloquially as the Bear Flag Republic, when it seceded form Mexico. And there is an Ursus arctos californicus on the state flag of California.

Lebec, a town located just north of Tejon Pass, about 80 miles north of Los Angeles, is named for Peter Lebec, a trapper who was killed by one of those bears in 1837.
