I used to work with a guy back in the early 1980s who lived in Poland until he was 13. He was roughly my age so his family must have come to the US around 1970. I asked what was the first impression of the US that sticks most in mind. His answer “ a Grocery store !”.

Yes, I remember seeing video of East Germans coming to West Berlin after the wall came down. These were adults that had never seen a banana.

That completely rings true to me. My wife went on a trip to Finland with my mother back around 1989, and they took a ferry over to Estonia.

My wife (and mother) said it was the most depressing place, huge gray, eroding apartment buildings, and as I was describing this video to my wife, she mentioned a store she went into that had a turnip. One turnip.
