It was not a “massacre.” It was a pitched battle.
Not only that, much of what burned was a notorious red light district (saloons, pool halls and brothels) which had been a blight on the city.
In the 1970s, I worked with an older white man who told me of his time spent in the archer-Greenwood brothels back in the 1940s or so. One of the last brothels closed down some time in the 1970s to complete the 244 bypass.
Hwy 244 crosses a section of that area.
