A bitter defamation lawsuit is now brewing between Johnny Depp and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) after new documents revealed the non-profit's staff penned the explosive domestic violence op-ed at the center of the actor's $50million libel suit against ex-wife Amber Heard.
A trove of emails seen by DailyMail.com suggest Heard, 35, had minimal input in the December 2018 article which was written by an ACLU strategist then submitted to her for approval.
When it appeared in the Washington Post, Depp sued for libel.
Three years on, the ACLU's involvement is threatening to drag the nonprofit deeper into the toxic lawsuit. Depp's lawyers hint it could even see them added as a defendant.
'This new trove of emails finally proves one of the things the ACLU has fought for years to hide: they wrote Amber Heard's false op-ed for her and were co-conspirators with Ms Heard from the start,'
The ACLU is already facing a May 28 deadline to respond to a barrage of subpoenas from Depp's legal team who want to know if Heard ever honored a public 2016 pledge to donate half her divorce money - some $3.5million - to the vaunted civil rights group.
Now, previously unseen correspondence obtained by DailyMail.com reveals ACLU staff came up with the idea for the op-ed when they appointed Heard an ambassador on women's rights in late 2018.
Communications strategist Gerry Johnson emailed Heard's reps on November 6 proposing an article attacking the Trump administration for making the 'US less safe for survivors of genderbased violence.'
'She can also, of course, mention Trump's irresponsible attacks on Christine Blasey Ford and survivors who don't report right away.
'If she feels comfortable, she can interweave her personal story, saying how painful it is as a GBV survivor to witness these setbacks,'

Her body language always showed she was repulsed by him.
The Liberals and the media (one and the same, I am sure) are completely out of control.
do activists who highlight gender based violence care about domestic violence in same sex relations?
lesbians hit too
Wow. I had just read this article when you posted it. I could care less about Depp or any of the hollyweird crowd, but this is pretty well written and it sounds like his attorney’s were the primary source.
If true, he may have a decent case. I don’t care about him or his personal case, but it would be nice to see the radical left held to account for this crap for once even if this is left on left combat.
The “smearprint” of the left has been used to great effect. I still think this is what they did to Trent Lott back in the day to get rid of him. Out of the blue there were dozens of hit pieces on the same day stirring up a controversy with nary a mention of others. Robert Bird’s funeral came along and it was a “who’s who” of the left praising him despite his record being far worse than Strom’s and we got nothing but crickets.
I’ve read numerous times he doesn’t like to bathe or shower.
He really stepped in it when he married this one.
Neither one is innocent and they both are antiTrump
Who cares about them. Read the piece and see what happened. Essentially a group of leftist lawfare types crafted a narrative for her to plagiarize and the media predictably ran with it.
Sounds familiar doesn’t it? This is a smear job and why was the ACLU involved in it? Leftist minions. This is the game the left plays to distort reality and attack people and their willing comrades in the media lap it up every time. It is why they all use the same buzzwords on their broadcast in the same day or make the same statements. They all get the same talking points.
Yeah, but the smell of money sure seemed to overcome that.
I’ve had a number of cops (more than three) tell me the most dangerous domestic situations they respond to are the ones involving lesbians. They’re absolutely brutal.
So Amber Heard is an ACLU activist. She also promised to give the ACLU a hefty portion of her expected divorce settlement.
In return the ACLU connived to ghostwrite hit pieces on her behalf against Johnny Depp. After all, the hit pieces could nudge or force Johnny Depp to making a bigger settlement to their benefactor.
The hit pieces themselves are stacked with unverifiable slander.
I’m neither here nor there with Johnny Depp. But this time he’s in the right and we patriots do have a stake in the fight. This stinks of the same sleazy tactics that were used for 4 years against President Trump.
His influence at the time too.
Also, the memory of what he was in his youth. He was a gorgeous man.
The Washington Post is accountable for whatever appears in its pages.
The ACLU, on the other hand, should not be liable for the actions of employees/associates/volunteers doing unauthorized stuff on behalf of a woman not officially part of its organization, in my opinion.
Domestic violence is typically a state law matter.
Foreign domestic violence is a matter for foreign courts.
She is a crazy whore.
The ACLU, on the other hand, should not be liable for the actions of employees/associates/volunteers doing unauthorized stuff on behalf of a woman not officially part of its organization, in my opinion.
Even when the party they were helping was associated with them and promised them money from the divorce settlement?
This seems rather twisted in the ethics department to me.
I can’t say I’m a fan of Johnny Depp, but if he can take out the ACLU — take them for everything they’ve got — then so much the better.
“survivors who don’t report right away”
Men observe that women love to chat among themselves, and find it hard to believe that a woman wouldn’t promptly tell at least one other woman about an awful event in their life.
The image of Basil Fawlty getting irritated by Sybil Fawlty on the phone comes to mind.
Great show.
“Even when the party they were helping was associated with them”
She may have been endorsed by the ACLU, but she was neither an ACLU employee, board member or officer.
If she wanted to live & party on the French Rivera for six months I believe the ACLU would not have had any legal right to ask her to get to work.
