The Romans planted salt gardens. When they wanted to make a point or leave an impressive message they would raize a town, clear away the rubble and heavily salt the earth where the town once stood. Nothing would grow there afterwards, and nobody would re-inhabit land that eould produce crops.

Life was simpler then.
