We are balanced by gravitational fields way way way far away. The slightest shift could spell doom for all...

Scientists do the best they can, but their study of galaxies is a bit like taking apart a radio and looking for the talking people inside it.
There are lots of assumptions (called theories) that usually crash and burn each time something new is learned.

Eventually, every galaxy in the entire universe will be consumed by it’s own Black Hole at its center.
Then, every Black Hole will eventually be consumed by ever larger black holes, until they all are consumed by the final Black Hole.
Then, Big Bang #2? or #9999999999999999999999999+1?............

So what they are describing is the galaxy as a living cell in the process of metabolism? What a wonderous God we have.

Wow...“Above and below the galactic plane, two huge plumes of gas extend 700 light-years.”
For reference, the diameter of the solar system to the far edge of the Oort Cloud is about 1 light-year. The Oort Cloud is 100,000 times father from the sun than the earth. The average orbital distance of Pluto is 0.0006 light-years from the sun.

Isaac Azimov addressed that in The Last Question. It’s very short and worth reading.
