The more we look into this the worse it looks.
Cathepsin B and to a lesser extent cathepsin L have been found to be necessary for the Ebola virus to enter host cells. Same with cancers and crossing the blood brain barrier.

Yes. Ebola, zika, hanta, SARS and phlebovirus. That's what's on tap, methinks. Note the last big worldwide ebola outbreak was in 2014, and note the date of the grants.

I could not find R01 AI43455/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/United States[Grant Number], per se. However, I found grants to Paul Bates at UPenn, if you want to have a look.
