These ties were not “distant”. The cut/paste from the PNAS paper shows how they made it.

The grants U54 AI057168 and NIH Grants R01 AI43455, R21 AI059172, and R21 AI 058701, likely were all through the NIAID (note begin with AI) as part of their extramural program. Am looking for study details.
